Quick Overview

Satmap map card covering Republic of Ireland Whole 1:50k (OSI 1:50k)

Product Description

The Republic of Ireland, consisting of 26 counties and making up most of the island, gained political independence from Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom in the 1920s. The west coast of Ireland mostly consists of cliffs, hills and low mountains (the highest point being Carrauntohil), making it perfect for hiking enthusiasts. The interior of the country is relatively flat land, traversed by rivers such as the River Shannon and several large lakes or loughs, and large areas of bogland. From beautiful granite hills and low ancient mountains to a coastline of cliffs and sandy beaches, and from misty lakes and bogland to lush forest, visitors will enjoy the diversity and breathtaking beauty of the terrain which is perfect for exploring either on foot or by bicycle.

This map card contains:

•Topographical Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) 1:50,000 of whole of Republic of Ireland
•Base Mapping:Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) 1:210,000 of whole of Ireland (Northern & Republic)

I use this map all the time on my annual trip to the Emerald Isle, absolutely indispensable in order to locate many of the historical sites such as castles (over 3000 in the Republic) that are individually marked on the map (e.g. with a red dot followed by "Castle"). There are occasional errors in the compilation of all the 1:50,000 maps that presumably involved a "stitching" process that occasionally goes awry, but this is a minor nit pick. I should add that as there is no publication date for this map, it is therefore probably the same as my copy which predates all the motorway building that has ensued since, but again, not a problem.
